Apple MacBook Pro 14 M5 Max Review: A Compact Beast with a Few Trade-Offs

Apple’s latest MacBook Pro 14 with the M5 Max chip is one of those laptops that feels incredibly impressive the moment you understand what it’s made for. It’s small, incredibly powerful, and well-built, with the looks and feel of a machine made for professionals and creatives who need desktop-grade performance in a more compact package. Of course, it’s not perfect, and its biggest drawback is also what will make it the most desirable for most people.

What makes the MacBook Pro 14 with the M5 Max chip special is its performance, display, battery life, and build quality. According to Notebookcheck, the 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M5 Max chip offers “excellent overall performance, particularly for photo editing, video editing, and other creator-focused tasks.” The performance remains excellent even when not plugged in, making it ideal for professionals on the go.

The largest problem is the heat and stability under heavy load. The M5 Max chip is just too good for this smaller 14-inch laptop to handle optimally. According to Notebookcheck’s review, the device demonstrates thermal throttling and unstable CPU/GPU performance in comparison to the 16-inch model. In other words, the laptop is quick, but it cannot maintain maximum speed all the time due to heat issues. If your job entails long and demanding video rendering every single day, then this is important.

However, there are many good aspects of this MacBook. First and foremost, the Mini-LED display is one of the major highlights of this device. It is great for serious work and far superior to many other Windows laptops in this regard. Notebookcheck also points out that although other laptops might have stronger gaming performance and/or faster discrete GPUs in certain cases, not many laptops can compete with this MacBook in terms of CPU performance and display quality in the 14-inch form factor.

Another strength of the machine is its performance in real-world creative applications. As the results from the benchmarks cited by Notebookcheck show, the machine performs well in applications like Adobe Photoshop, Premiere, and DaVinci Resolve, in which the machine can deliver better performance than some of the more powerful Windows-based equivalents. It is therefore a viable option for video editors, photographers, and other creatives who prioritize real-world performance over games
