The OPPO brand is teasing the release of its OPPO Find X9 Ultra in India. According to the information provided, the new smartphone will feature an advanced periscope camera system. The camera technology will enable 10x optical zoom through the use of five prisms. It is expected to be the first smartphone with such a design. The light will bounce on five different surfaces until it hits the camera sensor. This will create a much greater focal distance.
A majority of the flagship phones utilize a single prism for light deflection from the path, allowing room for the placement of lenses while maintaining the compactness of the module. With the Find X9 Ultra, the use of the technology will involve deflecting the light five times in the span of 29mm. As such, the effective focal length of the light will be around 230mm, which is the equivalent of 10x optical zoom.

This feature provides the benefit of capturing the image through optics and not through digitization. This means that the subject can be captured in detail without the loss of resolution and the behavior of background compression in the same way that it works in telephoto lenses.
Yet, multiple reflections complicate matters. Every reflective point might influence light transmission as well as lead to stray light, particularly at higher levels of magnification. To counter such issues, OPPO introduced what it refers to as Pristine Optical Path Architecture by integrating a diaphragm measuring a few nanometers for minimizing stray light. With magnification levels of 10x, even slight hand movements will be accentuated. With Find X9 Ultra, OPPO has planned the application of an optical image stabilization technology that enables sensor shifting for mitigating such effects and taking pictures at even 20x optical quality magnification levels.
The 10x periscope lens will work alongside a 200MP primary camera with Sony LYTIA 901 sensors, a 200MP 3x telephoto camera with 1/1.28-inch sensors for low-light portraiture, as well as telemacro photography and a 50MP ultra-wide camera lens. All the lenses will allow 4K 60fps Dolby Vision recording.

All the hardware will be supported by the LUMO Image Engine, which will help manage color, exposure, and details. OPPO claims that the focus will be on capturing the best image optically, with post-processing adding to the quality.
It comes after an overall trend away from solely using computational photography. Whereas advancements made by phone cameras in recent years have relied heavily on artificial intelligence and post-processing, the Find X9 Ultra seeks to make the most out of what can be achieved physically through a module. OPPO has not confirmed its launch date, pricing or availability in India yet.
