Hunter: The Reckoning – Deathwish Revealed: Xbox’s Dark RPG Set for Summer 2027

Hunter: The Reckoning – Deathwish Brings Dark RPG Horror to Xbox in 2027

Hunter: The Reckoning – Deathwish is one of the more intriguing announcements to come out of the March 2026 Xbox Partner Preview, and it already seems like a game that fans of the horror and action genres will want to pay attention to. Described by Xbox Wire, the game is being developed by Teyon, the same company responsible for RoboCop: Rogue City, but this time around, the studio is shifting gears to something much darker and RPG-oriented. It is set in the World of Darkness universe and follows the player character, a modern-day monster hunter, as they attempt to survive a supernatural war in New York

Unlike the other Hunter: The Reckoning games, Deathwish is not an action beat-’em-up. This is a first-person action RPG with investigation, branching storylines, companions, romance, side quests, and multiple ways to solve problems. This is a big difference, and it means the game is likely trying to be something much more immersive. If you’re a fan of games where you get to make choices that affect the outcome, then this game has a lot to offer.

One of the most interesting aspects is the RPG elements. According to Xbox Wire, the player gets to create their own character from the ground up instead of choosing a set character. This means that you get to decide what the character looks like, what their attributes are, what skills they have, and even what their personality is like through dialogue options. Furthermore, the developers have confirmed that the game draws inspiration from the tabletop RPG Hunter: The Reckoning 5th Edition, which includes skills, dice checks, advantages, and flaws.

The atmosphere also appears to be another major draw. The game director, Piotr Łatocha, has said that the main fantasy is living in a “real” New York until you find out monsters are living in plain sight. The tone of the game has apparently been likened to Supernatural, with Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines and Baldur’s Gate 3 also providing inspiration. This could give Deathwish an edge over other games in the upcoming Xbox releases.

In terms of gameplay, it appears that Deathwish will have a good balance between fighting and investigation, as well as relationships. According to Teyon, while they are drawing inspiration from RoboCop: Rogue City, they are slowing down the gameplay to make room for exploration and role-playing. The world will be semi-open, which means you can play through the main storyline while still exploring side content and relationships. This sounds like a good fit for a supernatural RPG where investigation is just as important as fighting.

The big takeaway is quite simple, though. The biggest takeaways are that Hunter: The Reckoning – Deathwish appears to be significantly more ambitious than many were expecting. The idea of combining horror, action, RPG elements, and choice in an already popular genre is quite exciting. If Teyon can bring quality writing, atmosphere, and player choice, then this has the potential to be one of the most exciting dark fantasy games coming to Xbox in the next couple of years. It has been confirmed for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, and Xbox Cloud with a Summer 2027 release window.
