Ascend to Zero Is Bringing Fast-Paced Time-Control Roguelike Action to Xbox
Ascend to Zero appears to be one of those indie games that immediately captures one’s attention, if only because of one unique and powerful idea: what if one could actually stop time in the middle of chaos and turn survival into strategy? Well, that’s precisely what’s promised with this upcoming roguelike, and it already appears to be one of those games that’s a little different from the usual wave-based action games flooding the genre right now.
According to the official Xbox announcement, the game was actually revealed during the latest Xbox Partner Preview, and it’s centered around a fast-paced combat system where one fights against hordes of enemies, surviving and gaining power with a dash of time-manipulation abilities. The idea of pausing time already sets this game apart from many other survival roguelikes out there.

What is interesting is that the game does not appear to be content with simply being “just another roguelike.” The developer explains that the game began as a prototype based on the developer’s experience with feeling cornered by enemies and wanting one additional second to react. The developer then worked to craft a system that would allow players to effectively freeze time and use a strategic “turn” within a real-time battle. This may prove to be the greatest strength of the game if executed effectively.
The progression side also seems to be ambitious. The developers note that, based on feedback, the developers worked to expand the growth systems within the game, resulting in 200+ new items, better gear, and three new systems for upgrading that gear. This would indicate that the game is designed to offer players not just survival, but also the power fantasy that is often desired with modern roguelike games.

As far as the actual story goes, the sci-fi premise of the game is simple to grasp and interesting enough to support the gameplay. The premise is that humanity has been destroyed by a mechanical invasion, and the last person on Earth goes back in time to change the course of events. Of course, the big gameplay twist is the fact that the player has 30 seconds to save the world, but can extend the clock with combat and strategic use of abilities. This is a great premise because it’s a ‘save the world in half a minute’ scenario, which is perfect for a quick gaming session.
As far as the actual look of the game goes, Ascend to Zero is trying to stand out with a good pixel art style and flashy skill effects. If the controls are smooth and the gameplay with the clock remains interesting after multiple attempts, then Ascend to Zero could definitely become one of those sleeper indie titles that people talk about and play because of the buzz surrounding it.
The biggest advantage for Xbox gamers, however, is accessibility. Ascend to Zero launches on July 13, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Cloud, and it launches day one on Xbox Game Pass with Xbox Play Anywhere support. This means that, overall, this game is a relatively easy one to play, especially if you’re a fan of roguelikes, but want a game that is quicker, smarter, and more experimental than most.
